The Canadian International Stakes is the richest horse race run in Canada every year with a purse of $2,000,000 (double that of the Queen’s Plate).  It is held every year in October at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.   The Canadian International Stakes is a 1.5 mile race (12 furlongs) run on turf that allows any Thoroughbred horses from 3 years and up entry.  The race is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series, which means that the winner of the race automatically earns a place in the American Breeders’ Cup race.

Where To Bet

The best online racebook  for betting on the Canadian International Stakes is SportsInteraction.com.  They take bets on every race held at Woodbine Racetrack, including of course the Canadian International Stakes.  Sports Interaction left the American market in 2010 and has since been focused on building their Canadian market share.  This means that Sports Interaction offers everything Canadians could want in a sportsbook including easy to use banking options, betting options for Canadian sports you may not find elsewhere and Canadian specific promotions.  They also offer a 100% matching bonus up to $125 for anyone signing up to Sports Interaction through our site.

As mentioned above Sports Interaction does not accept American bettors.  If you are from the United States then I suggest opening an account at Bovada.lv to bet on this years Canadian International Stakes.

How To Place Your Bets

First of all you will need to open an account at Sports Interaction (or Bovada.lv if you are American).  Click here to open a SportsInteraction.com account.  After creating your account you should log in and click on the ‘Deposit’ button in the top navigation bar.  Choose one of the many deposit methods available to fund your account.  Remember that you will receive a 100% up to $125 bonus on your first deposit so I suggest depositing $125 or more.

Now that you have money online you are ready to bet, so I will help you find where to place your bets on the Canadian International.  Click on the ‘Horses’ tab in the top navigation bar to head over to the Sports Interaction racebook.  There you should select ‘Woodbine’ under the ‘Thoroughbred’ menu to bring up all of the races at Woodbine for the day.  Find the Canadian International race number to bring up the horses and betting options for the race.  You can place your win/place/show wagers from the first screen or change the button to any of the exotic wagers to go for the big money.

History

The Canadian International Stakes was first run in 1938 at the Long Branch Racetrack in Toronto under the name The Long Branch Championship.  The following year the name was changed to the Canadian International Stakes.  The name was tweaked again in 1966 to the Canadian International Championship Stakes until 1980.  Since then it has been known as the Canadian International Stakes, but the race was often officially named for its current sponsor.

The race moved from the Long Beach Racetrack to Woodbine Racetrack in 1958 and this is when the race started being run on turf.  The record for the current turf track and current distance of 1.5 miles is 2:25.60, run by Raintrap in 1994.

The most important peace of history associated with the Canadian International Stakes may be that it was the last race of legendary horse Secretariat’s career.  Secretariat won the 1973 race by 6.5 lengths, which is the largest margin of victory by any horse at the race.
